Why Isn't My Website Showing Up on Google?

Launched a site but invisible on Google? The usual reasons a website does not show up in search, from most common to least, and how to fix each one.

You launched a website, searched for your business, and found nothing. It is one of the most common things small business owners ask us, and it is almost always fixable once you know which problem you actually have.

First: "not indexed" and "not ranking" are different problems

Being indexed means Google knows your page exists and has stored it. Ranking means it shows up well when someone searches. A brand-new site is often simply not indexed yet; an older one that never appears usually has a ranking problem. The fixes are different, so it is worth knowing which you are looking at.

Reasons you are not indexed yet

  • The site is genuinely new. Indexing takes days to weeks. Patience is a real answer here, not a brush-off.
  • You are accidentally blocking Google. A stray "noindex" tag or a robots.txt rule left over from development will keep a page out of search entirely. This is the first thing to check on a site that has been live a while and still shows nothing.
  • Google was never told. Submitting your site and sitemap in Google Search Console gives indexing a nudge and shows you exactly what Google sees.
  • Pages have no links to them. A page nothing links to is hard for Google to find and easy to ignore. Internal links between your own pages matter more than most people expect.

Reasons you are indexed but not ranking

  • The site is new or low-authority. Trust builds over time and through other sites referencing yours. There is no shortcut worth buying.
  • The page is thin. A few lines of text cannot out-rank a competitor who genuinely answers the question. Depth and usefulness win.
  • You are chasing the wrong terms. "Best plumber" is a bloodbath; the phrases real customers type are usually more specific, and far more winnable.
  • Missing local signals. For most small businesses this is the big one, and it has its own section below.

The local piece most small businesses miss

If you serve an area, much of your search visibility comes from a properly filled-out Google Business Profile, the free listing that puts you on the map and in the local results. Claim it, complete it, keep the name, address and phone identical to your website, and gather genuine reviews. Pair that with pages that actually name the places you serve, the way our own city pages do, and with steady SEO, and you give Google every reason to show you locally.

How to diagnose it yourself in five minutes

Type site:yourdomain.com into Google. If your pages appear, you are indexed and this is a ranking problem. If nothing appears, you have an indexing problem. Check for that stray "noindex" and get the site into Search Console. For a fuller picture, our free SEO audit checks the technical basics of a page in seconds and tells you what to fix first.

What actually moves the needle

Once the blockers are gone, ranking comes down to being the best answer to a real question and having others vouch for you. That means real content written for people, a fast and well-structured site, and time. It increasingly means being quotable by AI search too, which we covered in getting mentioned by ChatGPT and Google AI. And if your site is indexed, ranking, and still not bringing in work, the problem may be the site itself: here are the signs it is quietly costing you customers.

Most "invisible on Google" cases are one of the causes above, not a mystery. If you would rather it were simply handled, our packages include the SEO and the upkeep that keep you findable. Tell us about your site and we will take a look.
